(Chase Stevens/Las Vegas Review-Journal) @csstevensphoto CARSON CITY The entertainment capital of the world may soon require health and safety training for workers in the entertainment industry. The Senate Commerce, Labor and Energy Committee on Monday heard Assembly Bill 190, which would require health and safety training for supervisors and those who work with stage props, rigging, pyrotechnics and high-voltage wiring. Supporters say the training is needed because of the a wealth of elaborate stage shows in Nevada. We just want to make sure that everyone has the training that they need to protect everyones life, said the bill sponsor, Assemblywoman Olivia Diaz, D-Las Vegas. The bill would require supervisory employees to complete a 30-hour course within 15 days of being hired. Stage and set builders, rigging and prop operators and wardrobe, audio, camera and lighting effects workers would need to take a 10-hour course. It really gets very very detailed intricate and very serious things being pulled off, said John Gorey, with the Las Vegas-based International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees Local 720. The bill has broad support from the entertainment industry, the Nevada Resort Association and labor organizations. The law would apply to venues with live shows such as theaters, lounges and arenas, as well as motion picture and television production. The bill has passed the Assembly with a 33-5 vote. No one spoke in opposition to the bill.

To fill that need, ATS significantly expanded its own in-house technical training program and gained the ability to deliver its educational courses to clients. "In today's industry, you have to be proficient in many different areas," said Gary Carwell, manager of ATS's SkillPoint Outside Training Services. "I tell people in today's workforce their job will change, and they need new skills, but you will always need people to maintain these machines." ATS has been an independent company offering factory maintenance and information technology services since 1985, but the expansion of its training program happened more recently, with the acquisition of technical training firm Learn Maintenance in 2014. That acquisition allowed SkillPoint to become a more mobile platform with access to 300 portable hands-on training stations and dozens of additional course offerings. Today, SkillPoint offers a diverse curriculum with more than 130 courses tailored for different skill levels in areas ranging from plumbing to robotics. Classes are offered at ATS headquarters on North University Street or can be held on-site with clients. In 2016, 98 percent of ATS techs took some form of training. Those technicians and employees of ATS clients logged more than 30,000 hours of SkillPoint training all together. "It's an opportunity for us to get to know our customers a little better," said ATS general manager Richard Pillman. "It's a huge advantage to have us there on the site." And the program is attracting attention from companies that have not previously had a business relationship with ATS, said training administrator Mary Shawgo. "It's not only ATS based," Shawgo said.
